The following is from a chapter in my manuscript ONE PART GAELIC, ONE PART GARLIC which discusses how much more useful those little handheld grocery store scanners could be, in the world according to Cindy.
The scanner display reads, “Item is not among your favorites. Add to favorites now?”
When you send your husband to the store by himself, this feature could come in handy if he wasn’t certain which brand to buy. Or, grocery stores could start their own diet programs where you pre-select eligible food and your scanner doesn’t allow you to deviate from that list. One day, in a weak moment, you cheat and try to scan a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream. The scanner broadcasts a loud series of beeps followed by, “Item is prohibited. Replace item on shelf and return to produce. Do not pass through the cookie aisle.”
